Bordering on the extreme: tackling the rapids of the Wye Valley

I am on the River Wye, paddling the southern border region between England and Wales. I only learnt to canoe yesterday, and now I’m about to tackle the grade II rapids outside the village of Symonds Yat. I’m not sure that my partner, Martin, quite understands the gravity of the situation as he manoeuvres our canoe — with me at the front — into the maelstrom. I don’t remember this happening in The Wind in the Willows.
